A method obviously was needed to give each plate a positive and unique identification. Recording sessions supervised by the first eight recordists of the Gramophone Company and its successors account for nearly 160,000 of these recordings. Gramophone Company Matrix Numbers Early Numbering Systemsīetween 18, some 200,000 different recordings were made.
